Chocolate Salad: The Unexpected Star of Zinfandel Pairing

Could the best dish for Zinfandel be… a chocolate salad? It sounds wild, but this unique creation has been blowing minds since 2006. With Lodi’s Wine & Chocolate Weekend happening on February 15-16, 2025, now is the perfect time to revisit this unexpected but legendary pairing.

Created by Chef Tony Lawrence, the Chocolate Salad was designed specifically to complement the rich, fruity, and spicy character of Lodi Zinfandel. Featuring a medley of bitter greens, Gorgonzola crumbles, sun-dried cranberries, raspberry vinaigrette, and toasted brownie croutons, it achieves the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors.

The key? Chocolate and wine both share tannins—one of the fundamental elements that make red wine so captivating. When paired thoughtfully, the flavors enhance rather than compete, creating a surprisingly delicious experience.

Want to know exactly how this dish comes together and why it’s the ultimate pairing for Zinfandel? Check out the full post where we break down the science of the pairing and share the complete recipe: [Read More Here] 🍷🍫🥗
