Run Because You Can – A Race Rooted in Rhett’s Legacy

On February 7, 1997, Beth and Randy Seevers welcomed their son Rhett into the world, a joyful addition to their family of four. Four months later, they received the heartbreaking diagnosis of severe cerebral palsy, setting the stage for a life of challenges. For seven years, they cared for Rhett with unwavering devotion until his unexpected passing on March 13, 2004. Though Rhett couldn’t walk or run, his infectious smile and resilient spirit left an indelible mark on everyone he touched.

In the spring of 2005, as the first anniversary of Rhett’s death approached, Beth found healing in running, completing the Shamrock’n ½ Marathon on the very day she lost her son. Inspired, she invited friends and family to join her the next year, and 35 people donned baby blue shirts in Rhett’s honor. By 2007, over 125 participants ran alongside her, and the Runnin’ for Rhett Non-Profit was born. Today, this organization inspires thousands in Sacramento to move—because Rhett couldn’t, but they can.

The pinnacle of this mission is the “Run Because You Can” 5K, now in its 14th year, held at William Land Park near Freeport and Sutterville. This event brings together 3,000 youth athletes from the Sacramento area, celebrating the completion of a six-week Youth Fitness Program offered free through Runnin’ for Rhett. Open to the community, the race invites everyone to run, walk, or jog alongside the kids, with registration available online or on race day starting at 7:30 AM. Packet pickup happens race morning near the start line, though Youth Fitness participants receive theirs from their coaches.

What began as Beth’s personal tribute has grown into a powerful celebration of movement, resilience, and Rhett’s enduring legacy—proof that one step can change everything.
